Shirley Heckles CBT
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a type of talking therapy. It’s a common treatment for a range of mental health issues. CBT helps develop coping skills for dealing with different problems. It focuses on how thoughts, beliefs and attitudes effect feelings and behaviour.
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), is a form of talking therapy that helps people reprocess and recover from past experiences that are causing distress and mental ill-health and wellbeing.
I am based in Oxford. Therapy can be delivered face-to-face or remotely using Zoom.

Talking about things and trying to make sense of them.
There can be times when life just becomes really hard work. It could be that something unexpected happens. Or it could be something has been going on for some time and has finally become too much to cope with. Either way, we can no longer think straight.
Unhelpful thoughts ... low self-esteem ... worry ... there could be trauma left over from years ago… we may be disappointed in ourselves because we can’t meet our own standards… when we achieve things, we make our standards even higher, never allowing ourselves to feel like we are good enough (perfectionism). Many of us have endless 'to-do' lists that we torment ourselves with.
Talking things over confidentially can help put events in order, help us to take a step back and examine issues from a slightly different perspective.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) can help us see how thoughts, emotions, behaviour and body sensations are all linked. By understanding and challenging ourselves, we can adapt, and make our lives easier and more enjoyable.
EMDR is a therapy that takes a different approach. We would establish targets that we needed to work on and then, ensuring you were ready, begin processing the problem to achieve a new perspective and a more productive way of moving forwards. It is frequently said about EMDR that it enables us to remember tough things that happened but it enables us not to relive them.
Issues I work with:
The space is private and peaceful, while being naturally light and airy, promoting tranquillity and stillness.
I also offer appointments online providing flexibility and an ability to access therapy wherever you may be located.
I feel like Shirley has really understood me and has always gone above and beyond to help me. I find her method of working suits me. I’ve learned a lot about myself and found a way through some of my darkest moments with her help. PW - Oxford
